The chief information officer for the Illinois Department of Innovation and Technology (DoIT) will be leaving his post in March.

Sanjay Gupta was appointed as the secretary of DoIT in 2023 with both private- and public-sector experience after working nearly 20 years in management and consulting for global technology organizations in the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Small Business Administration. He also served as a board member for the federal Technology Modernization Fund.

Gupta’s departure was announced by Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker's office on March 7. The agency praised Gupta for advancing several key initiatives, including improving fiscal health and accountability, as well as developing meaningful client agency relationships, enhancing procedure capacities and leading investments in the IT agency's workforce.

In 2024, Gupta told Government Technology that he was working with state lawmakers to make direct appropriations for the state’s technology needs, a departure from the chargeback model that exists in many states.

“I want to personally thank Secretary Gupta for his commitment to serving the state of Illinois,” said Pritzker in a press release. “His expertise expanded DoIT’s impact across technology and innovation sectors and improved our collaboration with Illinois client agencies. I’m grateful for his work and wish him all the best in his next endeavors.”

Brandon Ragle, the agency’s deputy CIO, will serve as interim until a final candidate is selected for the permanent position. According to Ragle, Gupta’s final day with the agency will be March 20.
