Maxon has been serving as the state's CITO in an interim capacity since January 2023, when the former CITO and Secretary of Administration DeAngela Burns-Wallacemade a return to academia. Burns-Wallace initially took the role in August 2019.
Maxon has been with the state of Kansas since 2009, most recently serving as the state’s chief information security officer since 2020. He also serves as a cyber defense operations craftsman with the Kansas Air National Guard.
“His expertise in information technology makes him the perfect choice to lead the agency and reaffirms my commitment to keeping Kansas’ IT systems safe and secure,” Kelly said in the announcement.
The announcement also cites several major accomplishments Maxon has been responsible for during his time as interim CITO. This includes developing the state’s recent policy on generative AI and passing legislation for mandatory reporting by public entities experiencing a significant cybersecurity incident, among others.
“I am humbled by Gov. Kelly’s appointment to continue in the role of CITO,” Maxon said in the announcement.
He will also continue to serve as the state CISO until a replacement for that position is determined. The CITO position is not a Senate-confirmed position.
