This change follows the departure of former CIO Mike Sarasti, which was announced in February 2022.
Contreras has been with the city for more than seven years as the deputy CIO, and he has over 30 years of experience in the IT industry, according to the city’s website.
With the city of Miami, he has assisted in planning and implementing a citywide IT strategy, as well as working on short- and long-term plans.
Prior to working with the city, he was the founder and CEO for SOS IT Services; the CIO and corporate director of ERP for Watsco Inc.; and the vice president of information technology for the National Beverage Corp.
A job listing has been posted by the city to permanently fill the position of CIO and director of information technology. The person who fills the position would report to the city manager.
The city has been working to position itself as a tech hub, with recent developments including the mayor’s request to receive his salary in cryptocurrency and the launch of a business-licensing app.
