Cybersecurity professional and nonprofit security leader Bernice Bond has been named North Carolina state CISO, overseeing its Enterprise Security and Risk Management Office (ERSMO), part of the North Carolina Department of Information Technology (NCDIT).

“In this role, I will oversee North Carolina’s cybersecurity efforts with a focus on strengthening partnerships and collaboration at the state, local and federal levels to protect our systems and data,” Bond told Government Technology via email. Her first day on the job was Monday and she reports to the state CIO.

Torry Crass served as North Carolina CISO from May 2023 to January of this year, according to the NCDIT communications office.

NCDIT is the state’s centralized provider of IT services, including cybersecurity. It has been implementing a whole-of-state strategy that includes funding a web application firewall and next-generation endpoint protection.

Bond joins the public sector from RTI International, where she was promoted to vice president and CISO for global technology solutions in July 2022, according to its website. RTI is an international nonprofit scientific research organization in Research Triangle Park in North Carolina. There, Bond focused on strengthening the nonprofit’s cybersecurity stance.

The new state CISO began her career with RTI in 2015 after owning an IT and risk consultancy firm. Outside of her cybersecurity career, she is the chair of the North Carolina Museum of Life and Science board of directors.
