The National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) named its 2022 State IT Recognition Awards recipients this week for a number of innovative IT projects aimed at improving government service delivery.

North Carolina received a Business Process Innovations award for its efforts to automate COVID-19 reporting systems and reduce the administrative burden on hospitals. The project implemented a critical resource tracker to help keep an inventory of available hospital beds, vital equipment and trained clinicians across the state’s health-care facilities. It also assisted hospitals by identifying any surpluses, shortages or gaps to better manage needs during the pandemic.

The state also earned an Information Communications Technology Innovations award for its prison telehealth program that expanded access to virtual health care for incarcerated individuals in correctional facilities.

Nebraska, meanwhile, received the Cross-Boundary Collaboration and Partnerships award for a project that allows state law enforcement to submit reports and citations electronically and to use barcode scanners to capture data from driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations during traffic stops.

Michigan received a Cybersecurity award for its digital identity program, MILogin. Under the program, users can access “state services and systems online across multiple departments using a single user ID and password,” according to Michigan’s Health and Human Services website.

Illinois also joined this year’s recipients earning the State CIO Office Special Recognition award for its Access Illinois program. The state’s information technology department worked to improve the accessibility of its key information systems and technologies, including the state’s websites and services.

Arizona received a Digital Services: Government to Business award for its underground storage tank compliance and reporting project, which protects against spills, leaks and emissions of petroleum and other regulated hazardous substances into groundwater, surface water or soils.

Texas received a Digital Services: Government to Citizen award for its Texas by Texas Digital Assistant, which allows residents to access services like renewing and replacing driver’s licenses and IDs from a single secure account or app.

Ohio received the Emerging and Innovative Technologies award for the Ohio Benefits Program BOT “In.” The program uses AI and process automation software to replicate human actions and perform rules-based tasks to assist the county workforce.

And lastly, Tennessee received the Data Management, Analytics and Visualization award for its vaccination registration and administration solution and the Enterprise IT Management Initiatives award for its Tenncare cloud services project. The state’s vaccination and registration administration solution helped connect residents with available COVID-19 vaccines while eliminating the use of paper and manual processing. And the Tenncare cloud services project was able to modernize its Medicaid system from an older resource-intensive infrastructure to a cloud-first solution, streamlining operations.
