Who conducted the first private spacewalk?

Answer: A SpaceX engineer and a tech mogul.

Three celestial bodies in space with a bright star shining behind them.
SpaceX engineer Sarah Gillis and Jared Isaacman, the tech billionaire who funded the mission, conducted the first private spacewalk this week. The two Polaris Dawn astronauts were testing SpaceX’s new spacesuits outside of the company’s Dragon capsule.

First to emerge on Thursday morning was Isaacman, whose helmet camera captured footage of the moment he emerged from the hatch. “Back at home, we all have a lot of work to do. But from here, it sure looks like a perfect world,” he said.

Isaacman performed several tests on the fit and mobility of his SpaceX suit during the walk. A 12-foot umbilical cord kept him supplied with oxygen, and he kept one hand on a handrail outside the hatch throughout. After he re-entered the spacecraft, Gillis emerged and performed similar tests in her suit. The other two astronauts on the trip, SpaceX engineer Anna Menon and retired U.S. Air Force fighter pilot Scott Poteet, remained inside the capsule.
