Mattmiller will replace interim CTO Sabra Schneider, who took the position after Erin Devoto stepped down in March. Devoto was instrumental in the city’s failed fiber network rollout undertaken in partnership with start-up Gigabit Squared.
A graduate of George Washington University, Mattmiller is charged with assisting in the implementation of a Microsoft Office 365 rollout, managing the city’s new data centers, and determining what is to be done with the city’s dark fiber. Mattmiller also told GeekWire that he wants to improve the city’s digital literacy, develop the city’s open data platform and ensure a solid IT infrastructure.
All options for pursuing greater broadband connectivity in the city are being kept open, he said. A new partnership like the one with Gigabit Squared is a possibility, he said, as is a publicly-funded network. In any case, the city will monitor citizen satisfaction when it comes to broadband.
Mattmiller began his career as a developer, but soon shifted to IT consulting. At PricewaterhouseCoopers, Mattmiller did work in risk assurance and data management consulting. With Microsoft, Mattmiller was senior strategist for Enterprise Cloud Privacy.
